LinkedIn is one of the social media sites that has become extremely popular over the years but unlike some of the other sites, LinkedIn had a slower start. It first came on the scene in 2003 and was founded by 4 individuals including Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke and Jean-Luc Vaillant. At the beginning there were only 20 sign-ups on certain days but later on in the year it started to show promise and continued to grow.

In 2004 users were able to use a new function to upload their address books and other new features such as "Groups" were also introduced. It also partnered at this time with American Express, which added to its credibility.

The first lines of business called "Jobs and Subscriptions" was added in 2005 and in 2006 such features as “People You May Know” and “Recommendations” were introduced. Companies could not only post job and career listings but they could also look for prospective employees on the network.  Companies could advertise on the social media website as well, which was a huge step forward for the company. This is the year that LinkedIn became profitable and began to see exponential growth.

In 2007 the company went global offering both French and Spanish language versions of the site. In 2009 Jeff Weiner becomes the CEO and President of the company, which paved the path for hyper-growth in 2010. By the beginning of 2011, LinkedIn boasted 90 million members and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

LinkedIn had been around for a full decade in 2013 and by this time had 225 million members with a growth rate of 2 members every second. In 2016 Microsoft purchased LinkedIn for around $26 billion and in 2017 LinkedIn was used by members in approximately 200 countries and had 500 million members.

This is a professional social media platform that provides connections to professionals. The profile pages are set up in a similar way as a resume where users can list their skills, provide career summaries and display their employment and education histories. It is free to join but there is also a premium service available that provides access to a number of different features.
